Njideka Crosby Group Recreation
Inspired by Njideka Crosby's use of layering, photo transfers, and collage, our team of five (two photographers and three visual artists) recreated one of her pieces, infusing it with our own identities. Crosby’s complex compositions, which draw on her personal experiences, motivated us to incorporate elements meaningful to each of us, especially our diverse ethnic backgrounds. This approach allowed us to highlight our individual strengths and bring together a unique, cohesive narrative through our imagery.
We chose to keep Crosby’s original composition but resized it to A2, mindful of budget and space limitations. Initially, we considered a full collage but decided to restrict it to the floor area after experimenting with photo transfers. The three visual artists created the collage, while the photographers shot various compositions. Ultimately, we selected a sharp, detailed photo, which was then photoshopped into the final composition. Although we briefly considered integrating the hardcopy collage, we opted for a digitally refined, crisp look to better mirror Crosby’s clean style. The result was a cohesive, layered work that resonated with both our admiration for Crosby’s art and our personal reflections.
